The Live Oak Society was established in 1935 due to the efforts of Edwin Lewis Stephens, long-time president of S.L.I. The Society was designed to promote the culture, distribution, and appreciation of live oaks. Membership was limited to trees over a century old, and annual dues were twenty-five acorns. The Society was inactive from Dr. Stephen's death (1938) until 1945.
